CIBC Halifax Contact-Centre Employees Shocked by Layoff Notices — Finance
Employees at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) contact centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, were reportedly notified of layoffs last week. One employee said the dismissals may represent only the first phase of a broader workforce reduction.
The employee, who spoke anonymously, said affected workers were informed individually during meetings held last week.
“We were completely caught off guard when the news began reaching people last week, and this is only the first group of layoffs,” the employee said.
The worker added that the announcements came as a shock and had a significant impact on staff morale.

The employee, who has worked in CIBC’s telephone banking division for approximately 10 years, said the bank’s contact centres employ about 3,000 people across Canada. Between 400 and 500 employees are reportedly based in Halifax, including some who work remotely.
According to the employee, management said the positions were being eliminated as part of a corporate restructuring. However, the worker said managers did not provide detailed answers to employees’ questions.
“Instead, we were directed to our termination-information package,” the employee said

A CIBC spokesperson said decisions involving the bank’s workforce are not made lightly.
“Positioning our workforce to support our customer-focused growth strategy is a priority for our bank throughout the year. As we allocate resources efficiently to areas where team members are most needed, some changes affecting roles may occur,” the spokesperson said.
The bank added that it remains committed to redeploying employees whenever possible and supporting them during the transition.
Employees to receive severance
According to the anonymous employee, workers affected by the layoffs will receive severance based on their length of service.
“I will be fine, but I worry about my wonderful colleagues, especially single parents and those living paycheque to paycheque. For many of them, this job was their livelihood,” the employee said.
The worker also said that although some employees have not been affected so far, morale across the team is extremely low.
“They are worried they will be the next ones to be laid off,” the employee said.
The exact number of layoffs at the Halifax contact centre and the full length of the restructuring process have not been disclosed in the information provided.
