The MQ-9 Reaper is an uncrewed aircraft used for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and, when armed and authorized, precision-strike missions. The aircraft involved in the planned transfer are currently operating under U.S. Africa Command and would be reassigned to U.S. Southern Command, according to six people familiar with the plans who spoke to CNN. 

The U.S. government has not publicly released a formal announcement identifying how many drones will move, their future bases, the timing of the transfer or the operational rules that would govern their use. 

Focus on South 

Sources told CNN that the redeployment is linked to anticipated counter-narcotics and counterterrorism operations in South America. Potential operations in Ecuador were among the scenarios cited in the reporting, amid expanded security cooperation between Washington and Quito. 

No specific operation, target, timetable or authorization for strikes in Ecuador or elsewhere in South America has been publicly confirmed. The planned shift should therefore not be described as confirmation of an imminent U.S. attack or a new combat operation.

The move follows previous U.S. deployments to the Caribbean that included MQ-9 drones, F-35 fighter jets and at least one AC-130 gunship as part of efforts targeting suspected drug-trafficking vessels, according to CNN. 

Supporters of expanded drone deployments argue that the aircraft can provide persistent surveillance across large maritime and land areas. Critics, however, have raised concerns about accountability, sovereignty, civilian protection and the legal framework for using armed drones outside conventional battlefields. The U.S. has not disclosed how these issues would be addressed in any future South American operations.

The MQ-9 Reaper is a remotely piloted aircraft operated by the U.S. military for surveillance and intelligence missions and can be configured to carry precision-guided weapons. Its ability to remain airborne for extended periods has made it a central platform in U.S. counterterrorism and reconnaissance operations. 

Its use in South America would mark a potentially significant expansion of the regional role of remotely piloted U.S. military aircraft, but the scale and nature of the deployment remain unclear
